Dominica Crossing - Overview and Description

Welcome to Dominica Crossing, a remote and rugged island trail race.

The Caribs, who settled here in the 14th century, called the island Waitikubuli, which means 'Tall is her Body.'

Dominica (DOM-in-EEK-a): This small volcanic island has many names but they all point to a place of unmatched charm, incredible beauty and dramatic terrain features that has been left preserved and unspoiled in its quiet corner of the Caribbean. It is like stepping into Jurassic Park, with several peaks over 4,000ft. It also boasts one of only two World Heritage Sites in the Eastern Caribbean - Dominica's Morne Trois Pitons National Park.

Starting at sea level this point to point race will take you right through the heart of the park and climb up the island's highest peak, Morne Diablotins, 1447 metres (4747 ft).

Sandwiched between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south it marks the midpoint of the Lesser Antilles. The island has an area of 754 sq km (291 sq mi) and is 47 km (29 mi) long by 26 km (16 mi) wide, with a coastline of 148 km (92 mi). It is covered in lush swathes of primary and secondary rainforest, interrupted only by rivers and waterfalls. The volcanic peaks of Dominica's interior dominate the landscape. In fact, with nine active volcanoes, the island has one of the highest concentrations of volcanoes anywhere in the world.

The Waitikubuli Trail is just now complete and completely traverses the rugged Caribbean island of Dominica. The local Carib people are looking forward to welcoming international runners with open arms and lively spirits. They are excited to showcase the trail and all that the island has to offer visitors at Dominicas first 100k ultra and 50k ultra. We have been granted special permission by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MOAF) to stage an international Trail Race.

Getting to Dominica:

Two major airlines offer daily flights. The most popular route from the U.S. is via Puerto Rico on American Eagle and form the U.K. or Carribean, via Antigua or Barbados on LIAT.

We'll see you there.

Peace.
